Jazz trio The Willie August Project have released four CDs of original compositions and also perform a vast repertoire of standards, jazz classics, and progressive jazz tunes by artists like Pat Metheny as well as distinctive covers. Named for guitarist Ben Siems’ late grandfather, this jazz trio has racked up a host of national awards and honors, including #1 New Artist on Sirius-XM Real Jazz. Described by Cadence magazine as “a fountain of muted melody, with a masterful grasp of the guitaristic arts,” Siems writes heartfelt tunes that vividly portray settings from the Peruvian Andes to a bustling New York bridge to a misty morning at Port of Duluth. Co-founder Jeremy Hauer (drums) shapes the band’s instantly recognizable sound by “using his drum kit in a painterly, postmodern way” (Minneapolis Star Tribune), gliding between compelling whispers and dramatic flourishes. Top Minnesota upright bassist Graydon Peterson rounds out this powerhouse group whose music, as one audience member put it, “goes straight to the soul, almost bypassing the ears.” Cool music on a hot summer night!
